Asist. dr Marko Zlatanović

Marko Zlatanovic was born on April 28, 1984 in Nis, he was awarded a Vuk Karadzic diploma in elementary school, where he participated in mathematics and physics competitions. He finished the Stevan Sremac grammar school in Nis as an excellent student. He entered the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Nis in 2003 and graduated in June 2009, with an average grade of 9.61. During his studies, he was a scholarship holder of the Government of the Republic of Serbia since his second year of studies, and in the last year of his studies he was a scholarship holder of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the best final year students in the country.

During his studies, he was a teaching fellow in the Pathophysiology course, as well as a participant in student congresses, where he had the best paper in the field of Ophthalmology. He participated in the exchange program of medical students around the world. As part of the program, he spent a month in Mexico at the Faculty of Medicine in Monterrey for professional training.

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, he enrolled in doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Nis, and received a scholarship from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Since June 2010, he has been employed permanently at the Clinic for Eye Diseases of the University Clinical Center in Nis. He entered the specialization in ophthalmology in April 2011, and passed the final specialist exam with the highest grade.

In 2019, by the decision of the Scientific Teaching Council of the Faculty of Medicine in Nis and the University of Nis the topic for his doctoral thesis entitled “The state of the capillary network in the macula in patients with diabetes without clinically visible diabetic retinopathy compared to the healthy population” was approved. He successfully completed his thesis defense in July 2022.

He has been employed at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nis, since December 28, 2021, with the current title: Assistant for a narrow scientific field in Ophthalmology.

He is the author and co-author of 16 papers published in both domestic and foreign journals, of which 5 papers are in a prominent international journal (M22), 8 in an international journal (M23) and 3 in leading national journals (M51). He presented his works at numerous domestic and foreign congresses. The total number of announcements printed in excerpts at international meetings is 31 and at meetings of national importance 22. He gave presentations at the Congress of Ophthalmologists of Serbia (Subotica in 2010, Arandjelovac in 2011, Zlatibor in 2013, Novi Sad in 2014, Subotica in 2015, Belgrade in 2016, Aranđelovac in 2017, Novi Sad in 2019). He also presented his works at numerous international congresses within the SOE and ESCRS associations, 16th EURETINA Congress, 2016, Copenhagen; 17th EURETINA Congress, 2017, Barcelona; 22nd Winter ESCRS Meeting, 2018, Belgrade.

He is currently involved in two projects of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Nis.

He is a member of “AAO – American Academy of Ophthalmology” since 2011, as well as “EVRS – European Vitreoretinal Society”, “SOE – European Society of Ophthalmology”, “ESCRS – European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery”, and Serbian Glaucoma Society as well as the Association of Ophthalmologists of Serbia.

He is the winner of the “SOE – European Society of Ophthalmology” scholarship, the “ESCRS – European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons” scholarship, as well as the award for the best work of young ophthalmologists by the SSCRS – Serbian Association for Cataract and Refractive Surgery for his work entitled “Occurrence of posterior vitreus detachment after uncomplicated phacoemulsiphication” which was presented at the 32nd ESCRS Meeting, London in 2014.

From 2010 to 2013, he attended professional training in the field of the eye fundus surgery at the special hospital for ophthalmology, the Milos Clinic, in Belgrade, under the mentorship of dr Zora Ignjatovic, and with world-renowned fundus surgeons prof. dr Ferenc Kun, dr Zoran Tomic, dr Charalampos Livir Rallatos. During his specialization in 2011, he attended the “European School of Vitreoretinal Surgery” in Bremen under the mentorship of dr Klaus Lucke, in June 2012 as well as in 2013. He also completed a course in the field of Vitreoretinal Surgery at the MTS WETLAB in Sofia.

In December 2012, he completed a course in the field of ultrasound in ophthalmology: in November 2014, he participated in the “Intravitreal Meeting” organized by the Pallas Clinic and the company “Bayer”, his mentor was prof. dr Heinrich Gerding, Olten, Switzerland.

As part of his professional training and as a recipient of the “SOE – European Society of Ophthalmology” scholarship, he spent a month at the “Athens Eye Hospital”, mentored by dr Charalampos Livir Rallatos and dr Panagiotis Zafirakis in October 2012 and May 2015. From March to June 2013, he worked at the Clinical Center of Serbia, Institute for Eye Diseases in Belgrade as part of training in Vitreoretinal Surgery, under the mentorship of dr D. Vukovic and dr P. Paovic.

He stayed for a month at the “Institute of Vision & Optics, University of Crete”, mentor prof. dr Pallikaris and prof. dr Kymionis, who represent the world’s leading refractive surgeons.

During his education in October and November 2015, he stayed at “Columbia University” in New York under the mentorship of prof. dr Stanley Cheng and prof. dr Tongalp Tezel, the world’s famous fundus surgeons, as well as the inventors of one of the most important parts of this surgical technique. He was a scholarship holder of the American Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons when he attended the Columbia University.

During his specialization dr Marko Zlatanovic specialized in fundus surgery, which involves the retinal detachment treatment, complications on the fundus caused by diabetes, macular disease, and eye injuries. He is one of the few fundus surgeons in Serbia.

Dr Marko Zlatanovic also works in Montenegro at the Special Hospital for Ophthalmology “Oftalens dr Koturovic”, as a visiting surgeon – consultant, he is also an educator in the field of fundus surgery at the Clinical Center of Montenegro in Podgorica.

He speaks, writes and reads English fluently and uses it in official correspondence. In his spare time, he enjoys running, cycling and skiing. He ran several half-marathons and participated in triathlons. He is married, he is the father of two boys and one girl.
